If you were a Boy Scout at one time, you probably had a flashback after reading the words "Pinewood Derby." For the uninitiated, the derby is a time honored tradition where Cub Scouts race small cars they construct from a block of wood, plastic wheels and some nails. As you can see, this particular car is expertly crafted into an iPhone lookalike.
The car was designed by one of the professional print, web, and environmental designers attending a derby for charity put on by the Columbus Society of Communication Professionals—so it is not a true Pinewood Derby car. To be honest, I don't think that this would even pass strict Boy Scout regulations. Nonetheless, it is a damn fine looking car and it appears to be up to date with 2.0 software. Unfortunately, we don't know if this thing is truly state-of-the-art with 3G horsepower under the hood. [Flickr and CSArts via Make]

The idea of diving out of an airplane with essentially just a thin envelope of fabric protecting me from splattering my organs all over concrete like postmodern art makes me want to pee myself. Yet somehow jumping off a giant, bird-blending propeller blade, almost thirty stories up, makes me want to poop myself too. And that's exactly what these insane base jumpers do, on video no less.
I do jump off of my bed sometimes though, that counts for something, right? [Groovy Green via Huffington Post]

Mimobot, fine purveyors of geeky collectible flash drives, have introduced the next batch of Star Wars flash drives. There's an egg-headed C-3PO, Wicket, Imperial Guard and my favorite, Emperor Palpatine, who's channeling Dark Side force zaps at all times, keeping your data safe. Like the last batch they can play Star Wars sounds when you mount and unmount, if you want to go there. [mimobots via Underwire]

The Gadget: It may be seven months late to the party, but Timbuk2's Steve Sleeve is the latest MacBook Air sleeve to fashion itself in the likeness of a manila folder.
galleryPost('stevesleeve', 3, '');
The Price: $50
The Verdict: Let me preface this by saying THE THING COSTS FIFTY DOLLARS. Yes, it's constructed in typical Timbuk2 fashion — which is to say, well — and it would sufficiently protect your Air from scratches, but it costs FIFTY DOLLARS. Ridiculous pricing aside, it's made from a durable material recycled from plastic bottles, has welded seams, and is apparently 100% recyclable. Inside, it has a soft material that keeps your Air happy. However, the Steve Sleeve isn't waterproof and provides no impact protection. So, if you really want a manila folder sleeve for your Macbook Air, this is a good choice based on quality alone. Otherwise, you're paying a decent amount for a novelty item which does the same thing a generic $10 sleeve could. [Timbuk2]
