TOKYO: A Japanese plane narrowly avoided disaster earlier this month when it plunged over the Pacific, almost turning upside down, the transport ministry said on Wednesday.

The All Nippon Airways (ANA) flight, with 117 passengers and crew on board, dived 1,900 metres in 30 seconds in the incident off the southern Shizuoka district on September 6.

The manoeuvre happened when the co-pilot, in trying to unlock the cockpit door for the captain who was returning from the toilet, mistook a command button for the cockpit door lock switch nearby.

The plane, which took off from Naha on Okinawa island in the south, later managed to touch down at Tokyo’s Haneda airport safely.

A Boeing 767 carrying over 200 passengers from New York’s Newark Airport made an emergency landing in Warsaw, Poland, on Tuesday. Video footage showed the Polish Airlines plane touching down on the runway without landing gear, then sliding along before grinding to a halt. Airport emergency services rushed to the scene to extinguish a small fire and reported no injuries. The dramatic landing came only weeks after a similar incident in Iran in which a Boeing 727 plane was safely put down by a heroic pilot without its front landing gear.

A shorter version of the approach into Kai Tak without the music. Again, the lead in lights are barely visible through the rain as the video starts and then we get a great view of the checkerboard through to touchdown. This approach is in the rain. The other video is a little clearer but still grey out.
