This is famous as one of the more difficult landing approaches for pilots. Prevailing winds mean you have to approach over a ridge and drop down fast onto the very short runway and stop quick or risk going off the end into the sea. Pilots need a special license to be allowed to land here. Our landing was pretty straightforward, in tougher wind it can be pretty hairy.

Kathmandu is situated in Nepal near Mt Everest. Its elevation is 4,600 feet and is surrounded by high terrain/mountains all the way round from 9,500′ to the south to 29,000′ to the north East. For a jetliner there is only way one in and the approach starts some 17 miles south at 11,500′ and follows a steep descent profile to about 4nm at 5800′ where the profile flattens to the standard approach 3 degrees. Typically the Summer monsoon and BIG CB (Thunderstorm clouds) that sit on the approach path makes it somewhat interesting!

Note. The 2500 ft RA call heard early in the approach is correct, its 2,500′ Radar Alt above the 9000′ terrain and not above the airport elevation of 4,600′

The video starts from about 13 miles, 10,500′ and stops at the gate.

This is a short video taken from the cockpit of a Boeing 757 at London’s Heathrow airport. In those pre 9/11 days it was still possible to visit the cockpit! If you look very carefully (and you know your way around Heathrow airport) you will notice that I have mixed shots from several flights and that we are approaching the airport from two different directions!

Balkan was always a special kind of Europe indeed! This guys are hilarious, for you who don’t speak Serbian, this is the approach for final to LYBE. Check how they do the checklist, meanwhile talking;” About his buddy having a chicken farm just overflying him”, making comments about “How we left late ,but arriving early, this could never be done even in theory on 737 and I can’t believe we have this on camera. ” Meanwhile, Captain has lighted a cigarette to make his landing more “suave”… When turning base, the co-pilot says; “Let’s land on highway!” and then laughing and comments. Just before landing, Captain says; “Land so that his camera won’t fall from his hands,hahahaha”… “Hang on tight, we’re landing, everybody save yourselves” And just prior to touchdown, the First Officer says; “Why is it shaking it so much, F******??? The smoke from Captain is visible on final and good luck to the very special crew from Beograd in the future!
